Now that it's warming up, the Koreans are back and at a new field! FH rec field! I'm glad it's finally getting sunnier. It was however quite cold, especially when you're standing there not really doing much. Here's a buncha shots I managed to get.
And of course when Brandon gets a hold of my camera, he waits until I make the most ridiculous face before taking the picture (Juuuust coz he finds it funny).
Didn't get a chance to go up last year. So this year, we had to go up at least once. It was worth it though. The day started out really foggy. But the snow was awesome. Nice powder. I was up there with Brandon, Aman and Doug and the second we got there, we were already up on Humpty Dumpty. The second the sky chair opened up, Brandon had to get up even higher. So pretty!!!
After a couple rounds, the sun began to shine and the fog cleared off. =D!!! It was nice at first, however, the sun melted and packed down the snow. It started to get icy. Ick. Then I was too afraid to go down fast.
Ally had a 2 hour lesson. I think she was pretty miserable going down a tiny hill and having to crawl back up with her board each time. Jo Jo followed us up a couple times and after lunch she hung out with Ally and Aunty Kay.
Aunty Kay decided she'd get a pair of skis so we went up a couple times as well.
A.i people decided that we should have a get together and all go for Mongolian Grill downtown. I think the Facebook invite had around 30 people. Around 10 - 15 of us showed up. =P
Most of the peeps live in the Burnaby/Downtown area however there are a couple out in Whiterock and Guildford. James lives just across the little overpass on the other side of FH so he offered to pick me up =D.
We met up with everyone down on Davie and filled our bellies with mmmm yum. lol. I only could get 2 bowls down. Should have starved myself!!!! Definitely one of my favourite restaurants. I guess I could add those onto my list apart from burgers and fries, I like:
1. Pho
2. Mongolian Grill
Next time, we're trying Greek food.
Jeez. See I haven't even had time to blog about my new camera!!!!! =D!! I'm still getting used to all the settings. I'm used to the canon set up and stuff but ahhhh! It's so awesome. I had much joy using it during S.W.E.A.T. It's definitely not an SLR which I still have in mind. I thought about getting a film camera. But yea.. =S!!! I'm quite happy with this for now. I'm so afraid of scratching it.
Maybe hair is meant to always be changing. That makes sense right? So then the reason I've never been happy with with my hair is coz I always need change. I think the longest I've been happy with my hair is... 2 days. Well it's changed again!!! The girls at the cafe and I had a hair dye night. Sam bleached hers and did the colouring for mine. We've now gone RED. We'll see how long this lasts. Brandon obviously wants me to grow my hair out again. I've rediscovered that my hair looks better after it's straightened. My mom got Joey a new hair straightener that works wonders however I'm pretty sure it will dry and damage my hair.
I had to pick up my schedule from school and Ally wanted to follow me. We braved the cold and rain and SNOW all the way to Burnaby. Had a scrumptious Mac Dickies breakfast and she followed me around campus to pick up my pass and picked up a couple movies.
We met my aunt and mom back in Surrey then went back home to do some cookin'. Seems like the high light of our break. All of this cooking and baking going on. Ever since I felt like making sugar cookies, it seems we've been cooking a lot more. Mm.. now I want some sugar cookies. =P
Bno and I made curry puffs again while the girls made apple pie. Mm
Been so busy with SWEAT that I haven't had a chance to blog about everything else that's been going on; Cooking day with the gang, Aunty Kay and Ally visit, and Cafe girls hair-colouring night.
Lily decided she wanted to make stuff. They had tons of things in mind, from cheese cake to curry puffs.
4 of us ran around Superstore getting ingredients. We had Lily and Krissy with a basket grabbing stuff we needed while Diane and I went in search of a cart. So here I am, in Superstore with tons of people around and I have an 18 year old sitting in my cart as we scoot up and down the aisles looking for food. =P Ah I love Diane.
When we got home, there was a huge mess of food just everywhere. Diane and I made the curry puffs while Lily and Krissy made cookies.. then bread... and pudding.... and then cheese cake... lol
Originally, I thought I'd be working all of Spring break. So many things have been going on in the past couple of months...it's been crazy. My aunt and cousin are up here from San Mateo. They've been here for quite a few days so we've been hanging out a bit. As I mentioned, I haven't stopped since classes ended. I'm quite amazed at how I'm still able to function.
"I bet you Rob's giving Mackenzie a ride here and Mackenzie's taking forever to do his hair..." -Scott (Mackenzie has no hair however Rob and Mack did show up together and Mack DID have his wig on. As they walked in, all of us exchanged grins and giggles)
I've been at S.W.E.A.T 08 the past 3 days and it's been awesooome. Maybe it's coz I'm now much better at the whole film thing. The highschool kids this year are rockin' too. Or well, at least my group is. I'm in level 2 film which is Rob's class. A bit nerve wrecking at first when I had to explain things to our group and talk about the camera and different techniques and must-knows about film.
All instructors and volunteers had a quick run through of what was to happen this week. All the gamers arrived. Audio arrived. Animators arrived. But where are the film makers? Late.. lol. Mack and Rob were late and all of us are sitting in the theatre thinking the same thing.
By the end of day one, we had gone through a ton of camera techniques and basically everything that Rob and Mackenzie cover in first quarter was covered. We had 20 minutes to do a tour of the school to scout locations and so I brought them down the hallway and before we could even get anywhere far, we bump into Mackenzie, who began a huge conversation on where to go and awesome locations to shoot at. We had our rough ideas in mind and first thing day 2, we had a shot list written out. We shot everything for the rest of day 2.
Most of our scenes were outdoors and it was NOT sunny or warm! I was freezing my butt off out there. 8 hours in the cold at once? No good.
After much fun shooting, all of us retired back to class to log and capture everything. By day 3, we had our footage and were on our way towards our rough cut.
The guys put everything together and I tweaked a couple things. All 3 groups have been doing an awesome job. I think the work put out this year is gonna be very very good.
We even set up a Facebook group: S.W.E.A.T - Team Caruso . Yayy
I suggested to Rob that we should take a photo of him and the 3 volunteers doing silly things and holding up the "3 films". Here's what we came up with.
We're currently exporting everything to burn into DVD.
Bunch of us had dinner at the Cactus Club.
Pablo snapped a couple pictures of me the morning we crammed in as much as we could into our brains hours before our test.
Turns out my "break" will not be a break. I don't even remember last week coz I've done so much. Or at least, that's what it seems like. After finishing up my final projects, it's like, whoa, what's going on now?! I have SO many ideas floating around in my head, ready to be written down and shot. And here's what I be doing

I thought of A.I being completely different from University and how dull it is just coz there aren't enough students to have many "extra curricular" activities. But then again, school is basically the extra curricular activity. Lol It's that fun!!!
Well, A.I tries. They have small lunch time activities and such and the lady in charge of all the -fun stuff- planned a trip to Whistler (obviously to go boarding/skiing). I wouldn't have gone if Pablo hadn't asked me. He said they were just going to go take some nice pictures and hang out in the village. Paying 100$ to go up there to board wasn't something I had in mind so I figured, yeah why not. I had in mind, nice sunny day, nice day for pictures.
6:30 am, and we're waiting at the Ecafe for people. Ugggh so early. By just after 7, we were on the road.
Wow, it wasn't that eventful. I mean, I was like, yea this will be fun and stuff. And it was for a while. We hopped on the snow covered trails and Pablo took a bunch of photos. Camilla had her camera too so she was shooting away. It doesn't make any sense to me anymore, just taking random photos. For blogging purposes yeah, but my pictures just sit in my folders. Time to make some good prints!
Walking through the village was cool too at first. But I guess after a while, it got tiring and we were basically going back and forth and around in circles. I now know Whistler village like the back of my hand.
A.I's planning a trip to Tofino at the end of next quarter. At least we gops lotsa cool pictures =D
Love the water. One side's rusty and the other normal.
We had our last prod planning class today. Really didn't want to go. But it ended up being quite a fun class. We watched what we've been working on the entire quarter, Still Life with Scissors. It was quite good. The script looked really boring but visually, it was good. =)
Watched the first scene of NARC which was quite intense. We were interrupted by some guy cutting the shrubbery outside so we had our break and then came back and watched the making of The Abyss. We were however locked in the classroom. Pretty darn stupid. Lol Another thing we spent doing in class is complaining about how Ai doesn't meet our educational/academic needs. It's pretty crappy . Many complaints have finally been made though and the school better do something about it. Many people have already gotten their hard drives fried coz of the computers. =S Always good to back stuff up. I think that's something I gotta do over this break.
I saw these really nice shoes at Shoe Warehouse and I wanted to go back to get em. It was something like 2 pairs for 50$ which isn't bad. Coz I'm so tired of wearing my converses everyday. Need some change every now and then. And well yea. So I walked all the way through Metro and guess what?! I realize why they were having a sale! They disappeared! Maybe they moved or something but the store wasn't there no more! Hmmph!! Guess I saved 50?
So since I couldn't get my shoes =(, I went to Superstore to get FOOD for Wednesday. Will be going to Whistler with the school. We're renting a van and driving up there for a day. Yay!!! Unfortunately I won't be getting my camera until the end of the week. I'll be videoing. =P I don't even have any winter clothes. Gonna be freezing my butt off up there. Oh well! Still will be awesome!
Ok so I'm at Superstore with all the silly people who walk oh-so-slowly. And I grab a basket. I get a drink. I get some chips. I think..yea get some cereal too. Then I think.. what can I get to munch on that isn't chips or chocolate.... ok I'll get some mixed nuts. Always good. Lol. So I'm at the bulk section and this old asian lady is standing by the "Mixed Nuts with 50% cashews" bin. That's the bin I wanna get to! And there's like 3 of them. But noo she blocks them all off. And takes her own sweet friggin time picking and choosing each nut. My GOD. I really wanted to go up and smack the scoop out of her hand and hit her with it and tell her to STOP friggin picking out the nuts she likes! She literally spent 10 minutes just going through all the nuts for specific ones. Um.. go to the bin that has that nut in it? Stop picking from the MIXED nuts bin!!?!?!? I know I like cashews and when I'm at home, I usually eat the cashews first then the almonds, then the peanuts and I leave the hazel and pecans. Lol. But Gah!! I can understand that, this is what asians do, since I've been surrounded by this type of behaviour all my life. But wow, it's quite embarrassing. I will always be associated with these types of people. Me, I'm asian, I'm chinese. Will forever be a "bad driver" and will be the type to steal condiments off of food counters and steal straws and napkins from Mac Ds. And will steal chopsticks from asian places. Eesh. Also, will always take everything that's left over after a meal and bring it all home and make fried rice out of it.
That wasn't the only thing that bugged me while I was at Superstore. When I went to check out, I went to the self checkout. They've been doing this at Superstore Metro now. If you don't have much, you can scan the item yourself and pay the machine. It's quite cool. They however make it very easy for people to just walk out without paying. Yea. Well. I was in line and this fat lady was checking her BILLIONS of items out. I guess she was excited to use the machine as was I the first time I tried it. Well you only use it if you have a couple items!! Not a friggin trolley full!!! So when I got there, she had already scanned and bagged a whole bunch of her groceries and O MY GOD, each item had it's own bag. TALK about saving the environment. Superstore is all about going green. In fact most grocery stores now try to cut down on their plastic bags. And Superstore charges you for the bags. The machine however asks you how many bags you would like before you actually scan the items. This lady had... at least 20 bags. Ugh. At least she was a happy old lady, unlike crazy nut lady. You don't need a bag for each item!!!!!!!! People are so grr. Makes me mad.
Brandon and I decided that today, we'd make cookies and chili. Ok well, I decided I wanted to make cookies and chili and Brandon agreed. Lol. And he brought most of the ingredients =P.
Yea we haven't hung out in a long long time coz I've been busy with work and school. He's also been working a lot more on his school work.
We made shortbread cookies =D!!! Bno did most of the work though. K he did most of the cooking and mess making. I did most of the freaking out and running around and cleaning.

Lone cookie that got left behind. Bno cut them up all nicely. He put them on the trays and popped them in the oven. I came by and saw this one little circle just sitting there and I was like: "Bno! You left him out! How's he gonna go in now!?" lol. Poor cookie. But don't worry. He made it in after the first batch came out. Lol He was in the oven by himself.
After the cookies were done, we put them in the fridge to cool then moved on to CHILI! =D! I love chili. I love the days we have it at the cafe. My favourite days. I always get chili dogs. I know it's probably not the healthiest. Hmm.. tomatoes, beans, beef, onions, mushrooms, celery... Yea maybe it could be healthy.
Voila!!! It looks so pretty. I thought it was too salty though. I still love the chili at Timmy's. Mmm nice warm chili... and a bun... mmmm. The buns at Timmy's are yummmmy.
I don't know what got into me that day. I felt so silly.
Last week, Lily decided we should have a girls day out and go for lunch at the Spaghetti Factory in New West. I've always wanted to get off at New West station and walk around that area. It looks cool. I don't know if I should be worried about bums and crazy people. But then again, no where you go nowadays is safe so. I mean... gang fights in Surrey, shootings and stabbings in Metro. No where is safe anymore.
Me, posing with the menu
Me & Lily
Jmerz smack Lily on head with bread
Jmerz and Diane: Jmerz likey bread!
*sniff* Look at us..... all.. "grown up"..
After much stressing out over this assignment, we've FINALLY put it together. I'm quite glad though that I sat down and worked on it properly. I was disappointed with the first few cuts when I put it together. But I think I did a good job fixing it up. It's not perfect. And probably nothing compared to the other groups. But... here it is! Boogie Be Gone!
I think it was last... Thursday that I pulled my first all-nighter at school. Vince and I had to capture our footage for our infomercial and it WASN'T pretty! I had planned for Thursday afternoon. Got equipment out for 3pm and Vince was going to capture the stuff while I finished up at work. I told myself the night before. DON'T forget the tape. And guess what, I forget the tape. Rushed home after work, grabbed dinner real quick and rushed back to school, got equipment out and by that time it was already 8pm. Equipment room shuts down at 8 and doesn't open til the next morning.
Just when we think all's well and running, we find that it won't work. Cables not right.. not getting any image on Final Cut at all. We had a whole bunch of people come in to help and I made a bajillion phone calls to get help. Everyone told me the same thing. We even had instructions in an email our instructor sent us. Finally, we got image as well as audio... however... in black and white. Eeeesh. I figured, might as well capture it since it's the only thing we could do. Reason why most of our footage is black and white.
Well all-nighter #2 was a lot more fun than the first. I started my day freaking out coz we had to pitch our scripts. We got paired up and had to pitch each other's scripts, which I thought wasn't so bad since it's someone else's script. Well...I was wrong. My partner happened to be this crazy brained geek dude (who is quite cool)whose story idea was so simple yet so complex at the same time. I had no idea where to start. Lol I think I fail at pitching. And we not only had to pitch it once.. but 3 friggin times. .. Wait 2? 3? After which we had to pitch our own as well a couple times. Yeesh. Kill me already. We were done that around 11:30.
I grabbed lunch and took out gear to shoot the rest of our product shots for our infomercial. That only took about.. an hour.. only coz we were given crappy gear and had to go back and take out a different camera. After capturing the footy, we split and I started my crazy 12 hour edit.
The gamers had taken up the upstairs lounge area, squished the sofas together and huddled around the tv with their Wii. I think they started playing at noon... I had been editing my final project since around then too and had made so many changes that I had to keep going. The labs were getting so warm and stinky like dirty film students.
After putting a whole bunch of effects on my clips, I changed my mind and wiped out all the colour correcting I'd done. I decided to go with black and white which wasn't a bad idea. Basically, I sat in this lab working on my project, and every hour, someone would come in and want to watch it. They'd give me a tip and I'd start working on that. James gave me a website with explosions and I key framed it into my video to make a fireball!!!! lol I was quite proud. It looks like crap compared to crazy SFX stuff but hey good for a newb eh eh eh. So the entire evening/night, I was in and out of classes, eating junk food, hanging out by the cafe.
When I was finally done my edit, I thought I'd call it a day and continue with audio in the morning before class, however, Eli took a look at it and picked out a couple weird cuts which I fixed up and said I gotta do more colour correction. I crushed the blacks and evened out the mids. Didn't even want to think about audio. I did grab some sound effects off the internet. I figured that I could throw on some audio filters to get rid of the stinky ambience that pop up in certain shots but my brain was fried. By midnight, I was out with the gamers in the comfy couches playing SuperSmashBros on the Wii. lol Those guys are crazy. It's quite cool though. They're fun people. And very friendly. They'd pass the controllers on to whoever was watching so everyone would get a turn. Yea fun. Film Students and Gamers unite. Wooooo
In the morning, I had a PACE exam for Location Audio. I screwed up!!! =S!!! I don't think my instructor was too hard on me. But.. eesh!! I just got a couple switches wrong. Lol Chelsey asked how I did and I couldn't even speak properly coz of lack of sleep. "I got the.. the.. the.. the.. the.. switch.. flip.. thing thing.. thingy.. ack!!!" Hung out in the cafe for a bit with people then went back up to the stinky lab to fix my audio. Vince and I ended up taking more than what we had. 12:50 and we were still exporting. =S Then again, so was everyone else. =P
We premiered our vids. The first few were the best. Lol. So many were so friggin meeeesssed up. You wonder what on EARTH is going on in people's heads. So many videos on raping.. and killing.. vampires.. suicide.. death.. It was pretty depressing. Rob goes: "So.. um.. I think I'd better get a group rate for a therapist?" Unreal.
Well. Nuff talking. Here's "Death of a Ninja"!!!!
We had dinner with my uncle and family and a couple friends tonight. The waiter brought out a huge Alaskan King Crab for us. Eesh. The poor fella had to witness the barbaric people who were going to eat him! He was minutes away from his death! lol Yea.. 15 minutes later his legs and body were chopped up into bits and pieces for us to pick at and gobble down.
For the first time, everyone was in class and in their seats at 8:30am. Lol My instructor comes in with a huge frown on his face like: "Why are you guys all hear! You're not supposed to be here on time! Jeez!" We were pretty much just reviewing that day and spent an hour playing around with the gear. A heated discussion on the War on Terror and US currency went on for the last couple hours.
THIS has been stressing me out big time. We've been having trouble partially due to lack of interest in this assignment, lack of people in our group as Chelsey dropped out of that class, and lack of communication and coordination (gotta start planning things out properly!) But nevertheless, we manage to come up with this! Uber rough cut.
Vince, Chelsey and I have always worked together in class. Our very first shoot was the creepy fridge. Sad to say that, we shot our last video with Chelsey on Wednesday. She's decided that film isn't really her thing and will be going back home. Will miss her!! We've had our moments.
We just got word from Ai that since the number of staff is stable now, they're thinking of cutting down the amount of people at once in the cafe. Which means.. less hours! Which sucks! It's like the thing that allows me to have fun and destress at school! We were all pretty bummed out when my supervisor told us. Yeesh.
Work on Thursday was fun. I've been all stressed out lately, trying to get things in, trying to keep myself on my feet, trying to figure things out. Sometimes I think I do this to myself. Or at least, I let it happen. Maybe I want attention.
Really don't want to give up my job at the cafe. It's comforting knowing that at least I'll have friends like my co-workers to talk to when I'm all over the place.
Nice to be able to look down at my hand, at the permanent sharpie ink with smilies and my name scribbled all over and smile. Lol And to be able to think about all the things that happen at the cafe and all the silly quotes and things we laugh about. Makes me happy =).
Eli stuck a stickie on Tanner's back. (Yea I know, I told Sam that this is so elementary school. Not even highschool. Elementary!!) Well Sam picked it off and then Tanner put it on Eli's back. Lol What goes around comes around. So the 3 of us giggled as we watched him talk to people and head out to the back room unknowingly. Pretty mean but I let it happen coz he wrote it in the first place. =P Ah I love the cafe.
Tanner loves airplanes as I've probably mentioned. I'm quite amazed at how well he memorized this. He does it way funnier though. I believe I have a clip of him saying it on Facebook.
So today was one heck of a day. I guess I prepared myself for it. Murphy's Law happened all over the place. We were just not prepared is all; due to lack of interest in this assignment, we've left everything to the day before. Not professional!!! And it's very hard to find motivation when your other team members have none to share. I wrote out the scripts over the weekend and sent them out for our actors hoping that everything would run smoothly and they'd be ok with their lines. And well I think I casted everyone quite well. Only problem was one guy didn't wanna play his part coz he's done it so much. Which is understandable. So I was freaking out last night trying to see if I can trade rolls and stuff. But I had it all planned out! Eventually I just took him out and condensed the script.
Me playing director and explaining to Tanner, his roll
10:10 and people started disappearing and I couldn't take the gear coz it wasn't under my name. Time time time!! Setting up was uuuuber slow. I think we're getting better at the setting up dealy and fiddling with equipment but it's still so time consuming. Guess that's the fun of it all eh. We were missing sand bags and little things here and there. The dude in the equipment was freaking out as well coz he had to be somewhere for a bit and there were so many people with renting problems. Had to work with other groups to get everything sorted out.
I love how Tanner is staring so intently at the can of Red Rain while I'm on the floor freaking out as we're way delayed in our shoot and Eli's trying to help me fix up my script.
I had scheduled and planned out our shoot to start by 11. I gave us AN HOUR to set up. Still not enough. 11:30 and talent still not showing up. Had to make changes in the script a whole bunch and we did a whole bunch of improvisations which went well. I just didn't want each testimonial to sound the same.
You can say our shoot went quite well. I was satisfied with the takes. Post is gonna be another headache.
I let the guys settle the second half of our infomercial. My brain was fried and I felt like throwing up. It's so weird. I got a sore throat yesterday and all night I felt like throwing up? Very weird. I got myself some bubbly stuff and that DIDN'T help at all. I felt uber sick after.
Pablo helped us do some ADR. We recorded voice overs in the foley room and everyone came in to hang out with us lol. Guys were talking about bars and drinking. *eye roll*
Shot a 30 second scene at Vincent's which took us about 30-40 minutes and yea. Now I'm kinda thinking we don't have any insert shots!!!!! And we mentioned an item in our voice over which we don't have footage offfff!!!! Argh!
Hogen's sending me pictures of our shoot right now. Unfortunately msn is so stinky it's going uber slow.
I love the sun. Makes me all happy inside. The winter is nice when it snows. But yes, I can't wait for the summer!
I looked up at the sky the other day. Sun was trying to pierce through the clouds. I had my shades on so I could see a clear round outline. But my camera could not. I thought I'd give my shades to my camera (phone). But yea it didn't work. But I liked the colour. Lol
We're coming up close to the last 2 weeks of 2nd quarter. Our location audio instructor gave us a bigger assignment last time. We had 3 and a half hours to shoot an interview along with camera techniques. I haven't heard how our audio was but we'll be getting feedback this week.
Ai held a day for workshops and showcases yesterday at the Rocky Mountaineer Station I had class in the morning. It was all a big mess. Originally I thought I wouldn't be able to go since we had class yesterday from 1 to 5. But our class was combined and shifted so that we'd all be able to go. =S I wanted to volunteer so I called up the cooridnator and she scheduled me in for a shift. Bunch of people who were also helping didn't even HAVE shifts. They kinda went and helped out and left when they wanted. Yea it was weird.
I was late for class coz Translink had problems with the train at Surrey Central. *eye roll*. They had a bus come by to drive us to Scotts Road instead. Took me 2 hours to get to class. Was an hour late.
I sat through 2 hours of sound bite lecture and then went to Metro to meet Brandon. We trained downtown to ARTimation. I thought he'd be interested. And I think he was?
He played games and went to a couple of the workshops. I don't know much about the audio side of things but I think that's what he's interested in.
Well I got my volunteer pass but barely did anything. I hung out with people and walked around and watched the workshops. Brandon was saying there were more volunteers than actual people there to do the workshops lol
Very intrigued by the life drawing.
I look so goofy in this picture.
Bno left for home a couple hours in. I had no idea what I was supposed to do. Eventually, I left and went for dinner with a buncha friends. We went to a chinese noodle house downtown. I had Zha Jiang Mian. =P It was very starchy.
Today I'm just hanging out at home by myself. It's been a while since I've spent some quality Jamie-Jamie time. Tomorrow, will be shooting all day.
